Polytelis Alexandrae
Commonly called the Princess of Wales Parakeet or Princess Parrot

Origin:  Interior of western and central Australia
Length:  35 cm (about 14 in)

The Princess Parakeet is a stunning bird, the pink on it's chest seems almost unreal, it's so unusual.  They have a lovely wash of lavender over the back of their head.  If kept as breeding or aviary pairs these birds need to be in a large flight with plenty of room to exercise preferably 8 feet long.  As pets they are delightful companions and can be very good talkers.  The cage requirement of a pet Princess is much easier; 2x2x18" deep would be the minimum.  Be sure the cage can accommodate the long tail.  We feed ours 50% parrot seed every other day and supply pellets all the time.  They love to eat and love fresh food in abundance.  They are fairly quiet birds and can be kept in an apartment.  Their main call is a chirp very much like a cockatiel, although it can be a little louder.  They are able to bond to more than one member of the family.  They come in a variety of mutations, however we only carry the normal coloring.  I'm hooked on their gorgeous pink and lavender!
