Pionus Maximiliani
Commonly called the Maximillian Pionus

Length:  29 cm (11 1/2 in)
Origin:  Southeastern Brazil and northern Argentina

The largest of the Pionus parrots by about 1/2 inch,  the Maximillians has often been called the mellowest of all the species.  The babies are super sweet and mellow and cuddly, and their feathers are very soft. Their color is subtle but held out in the sun the  blues and reds appear vibrant.  These lovely, quiet birds are perfect for apartment living and make a very un-stressful companion to those who would prefer to share 'quiet time' with their pet. Not only are they very, very quiet but these birds will talk.  We didn't know of their talking abilities until we started hearing back from people who have bought the babies from us. Time and again they tell us that the birds have amazing vocabularies.  They will sit on your shoulder, or anywhere else you put them for hours, happy to just be around humans.

We have found the Maxi Pionus to be a very sweet bird, but every now and then there is one that turns out to be very  territorial of it's cage. Teach him to step up without hesitation and to know that the only way he can come out of his cage is to step up on your hand.  They will learn this very quickly and even the ones that are territorial will behave for you.  Once away from their cage they transform into sweet little birds again.  We feel that like any parrot they all can vary in personality, keep that in mind with parrots in general. We have had many people go by what they saw in one parrot and think it is true with all of that kind of species.
