The
Eclectus is an up and coming bird in popularity, owing to their
astounding colors and talent for talking. Many say they equal
African Greys in their talking abilities, the difference in the two
being that Eclectus are not shy to talk around strangers. If
socialized they will go to anyone and make great family pets,
bonding equally with everyone that takes the time to get to know
them. We have sold many Eclectus to families with children and they
seem to work out very well with them. Maybe that's because we
socialize our Eclectus babies so much, including with our own kids.
They are very affectionate and intelligent, with
nice mellow personalities. Females are violet-blue and red, the
males green with red and turquoise
under
the wings. They require a diet rich with fruit and nuts, fresh
food is a must. There will never be a problem getting your Eclectus
to eat! Theyare very well behaved, prefer talking to squawking, in
fact many of them are absolutely excellent talkers, learning whole
sentences and speaking in different voices by the time they are a
year old. Eclectus Parrots are our personal favorite larger size pet
bird, they win hands down with us.
Feeding your Eclectus:
These birds love to eat. Their digestive
tract is different from other parrot species and they need a special
diet to maintain full health and coloring. Do not feed colored
pellets! Eclectus love fruit, are a little stronger in their
preference for it than many other parrot species. Feed plenty of
dark green leafy vegetables. In addition Eclectus need plenty of
sweet potatoes and almonds in their diet. As a matter of fact,
their beaks are not designed for cracking nuts, they are designed to
peel fruit. We wean our Eclectus onto a special diet formed by
Lorella Desborough, who is a very well know expert on Eclectus.

Housing Requirements: Although a good size cage is important,
strong bars are not. Eclectus are not strong chewers and although
they may enjoy pulling apart certain toys and chewing on soft wood,
they are not destructive with their cages. They love toys they can
fiddle with, they love bells and swings and things to hang from. A
cage 2 ft deep, 3 feet wide and 3 feet high is a good size for
them. A dome top is strongly recommended as they do love to play
upside down. A playtop on the cage is not a good idea as for some
reason Eclectus can tend to get very territorial about the tops of
their cages. We recommend a separate playstand for your bird. By
all means make sure where ever he or she perches is not higher than
you are, it may cause behavioral problems. Eclectus are very good
about staying on playstands, they can entertain themselves for
hours. And of course, as long as they have fresh fruits and veggies
available they will eat and eat and eat....
